I could climb atop quite a political soapbox right now … But I will only say this:

"Thank you, President Obama, for keeping your word the very week you were inaugurated. A close friend credits a prescription-related change you made first-thing for helping her afford to keep her seriously ill husband alive. This medical cost reduction also was instrumental in helping my friend avoid bankruptcy."

My friends were once a two-Beamer couple with a sprawling home, thanks to two great incomes. But he now needs a new heart and can no longer work; she’s been downsized from jobs more times than I can count. Since Obama took office, things have actually been a bit better for them. Mostly because she can now afford to buy his oxygen tanks plus pay rent and buy food.

We don’t hear these kinds of real-life anecdotes in the news. There must be tens of thousands of people whose lives or livelihoods already have been positively impacted by our new president. But the vocal minority drowns out these important voices.

Even the liberal news media does the Obama administration a disservice by disproportionately covering the angry town halls, fear-mongerers, and gun-toters.

Many people know the good things Mr. Obama already has done. Here’s to his courage to keep this kind of good stuff coming. This is what keeps America strong, a nationwide family where every member is able and eager to contribute and help fend off all threats.

Unlovely Laurel, Maryland Friday October 11, 2013. Here’s some of our fellow citizens exercising their First Amendment Rights by prancing about on the Gorman Road bridge over Interstate 95. In a close up you can see that the individual on the right is covering his face with his hand. Why? A surprising number of motorists honked as they passed the banners although the evening rush hour traffic was much lighter than normal due to the ongoing partial government shutdown caused by extremist Republican gangsters in Congress.

Tea baggers, assault weapon fetishists and other far right wing crackpots brandishing signs and flags show up with some frequency at this spot. Today’s gathering here (there were similar overpass impeachment events across the USA…) was likely being staged in support of a rolling DC Beltway blockade by neo-facist militia influenced truckers and other actions by "Confederate heritage" goons, all united in advocating for the impeachment (or abdication by force…) of the "muslim president". Those events, widely promoted in disreputable corners of the internet, largely fizzled out. The trucker blockade was quickly dispersed by highway police and the ‘johhny rebs’ did little more than wave the Confederate flag in front of the White House and at the WWII Memorial on the National Mall. This time.

I empathize somewhat with the truckers. They’ve always gotten a raw deal and like most of us working folks have almost no friends in high places (certainly not our Disappointer In Chief Barack Obama and his crew…) but they’ve chosen the wrong target and the wrong solution if they want to make their lives better.

I stopped on the highway shoulder and got out of my Dodge to get the shot you see on this page; I don’t recommend that you try this. My parked car was almost hit by an Escalade roaring down the shoulder as it exited from the nearby rest stop.

Business leaders are facing an increasingly challenging environment, what with a record-setting chill gripping the country all winter, continued weak recovery from recession, unknown impacts of Obamacare initiatives, continued high unemployment, changes in consumer sentiment in emerging markets like China and now growing global unrest, notes Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing, a research firm focused on the affluent consumer segment.

Throughout the past several years, the luxury market has offered businesses and investors safe haven with the affluent consumer segment remaining resilient and aggressive shoppers. But a March 2, 2014 Wall Street Journal article warns that even the luxury market may be facing a crisis point, as “soaring luxury-goods prices test wealthy’s will to pay.”

The question is whether today’s affluent customers have reached a tipping point in which their desire for luxury no longer exceeds the price they are asked to pay. New consumer research from Unity Marketing suggests that 2014 may be the year when luxury marketers must confront that tipping point which will challenge their traditional branding and marketing strategies and their underlying assumptions about their target customers.

Changing times call for changing business strategies, Danziger advises. A new study conducted among over 1,300 affluent luxury customers spotlights opportunities for marketers that might otherwise be missed without rigorous research. This research is highlighted in the new luxury trend report Luxury Market Trends for 2014: What’s Ahead for the Affluent Market in 2014 and How to Take Advantage of the Opportunities.

“With so many unknowns, luxury marketers need to focus on the customers that offer the best prospects for growth both now and into the future, and that is the younger generation of consumers on the road to affluence. They need to understand their special needs and desires and configure their marketing strategies to attract their loyalty,” says Danziger.

“While income and wealth demographics are frequently used by luxury marketers to identify their best prospects, knowing that a prospective customer has enough money to pay luxury brand’s high prices isn’t enough to predict who is most willing to spend that money to buy. Unity Marketing’s recent study points to the fact that the age of the customer, rather than income, is a more important predictor to identify a brand’s best prospects.” This new study will help marketers focus on these high-potential younger customers who may be new to many luxury brands that historically focused on the over 50 year old crowd.

Recent trends in affluent consumer demand and spending for luxury goods reveals many affluents are trading down to less expensive brands

As past consumer behavior is often the best predictor of future behavior, the new report examines recent trends in affluent consumer behavior. For example, affluents’ overall demand for luxury goods such as clothing, fashion accessories, jewelry, watches, beauty, personal electronics, wine and spirits and other personal luxuries rose at the end of 2013, but spending is off by 31 percent from same period in 2012. Such a pattern — a spike in demand, but a decline in spending — points to luxury shoppers taking advantage of sales, discounts and trading down to less prestigious brands.

This is the pattern which the recent survey shows. It sends a clear signal that luxury brands can’t keep doing the same things and expecting to succeed. Marketers need to build connections with the young affluents, ages 24-44 years with incomes over $ 100,000, that are more willing than their seniors to trade up to luxury brands.

Danziger says, “Demand for high-end luxury goods and services is greater across the board among young affluents than matures, 45 years and older. What’s more, young affluents consistently spend about 50 percent more than mature affluents on luxury. Understanding this young consumer and what they value is critical to find growth in 2014 and in coming years.”

The new trend report highlights some trend setting brands, like Michael Kors, Uniqlo, Black Box Wines, Top Shop, and Havaianas that have successfully captured the generous spending of young affluents by playing to their unique sensibility. Young affluents are turning away from brands that primarily are used as status symbols, which is rapidly becoming passé as the 1% is increasingly vilified. Instead they want brands that reward them with pride of ownership and send a smart shopper message.

“The new report looking at the luxury market in 2014 is a quick but in-depth look at the current luxury customer market: what they are buying, how much they are spending, and where they are going in the future. It provides marketers with new insights and new ideas that can stimulate cutting-edge concepts and marketing strategies that will help growth for 2014 and into the future,” Danziger said.

Commercial Fishery Failure Issued For Panhandle 8-12-13 11pm

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Federal officials are declaring a fishery disaster for Florida’s oyster industry in the Gulf of Mexico.

The declaration by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce sets the stage for possible help from the federal government if Congress approves it. That aid could include economic assistance to fishing businesses and communities, including oyster fishermen.

The announcement comes a day before both U.S. Sens. Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson are scheduled to be in Apalachicola for a field hearing by the Senate Commerce Committee. The committee will take testimony about the impact of water flows in Apalachicola Bay.

The collapse of the oyster industry last year followed a drought that reduced freshwater into the bay. But state officials have also blamed the lack of freshwater flow due to increased consumption in Georgia.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today declared a commercial fishery failure for the oyster fishery along the west coast of Florida. The fishery resource disaster resulted from excessive drought conditions in Apalachicola Bay and elsewhere in the Florida panhandle during the 2012 – 2013 winter fishing season.

“We understand the economic significance this historic oyster fishery has for fishermen and related businesses in the panhandle of Florida,” said Secretary Pritzker. “Because the drought caused such a decline in oyster landings and a rather significant drop in revenue, the fishery qualified as a resource disaster under the nation’s fishing law.”

Under the Interjurisdictional Fisheries Act and the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the Commerce Secretary can declare a fishery disaster which makes it possible for Congress to appropriate funds to provide economic assistance to fishing businesses and communities, including oyster fishermen, affected by the disaster and to support other activities addressing the disaster.

If Congress appropriates funds to address the Florida oyster fishery failure, the Commerce Department’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will work closely with members of Congress and the state of Florida to develop a spending plan and distribute the funds to help coastal communities and the fishing industry, should funds be appropriated.

Within the last year, landings on the Florida west coast oyster fishery have declined nearly 60 percent, with a 44 percent reduction in revenues. This decline in revenues is an unusual occurrence in this fishery and is not part of a cyclical downturn in revenues. The state of Florida projects that with the continued decline in landings, revenue losses are only expected to increase and remain lower than the historical average until the oyster population begins to rebound.

“It takes three years for oysters to reach marketable size, so we are concerned about this depleted oyster resource that has traditionally supported a viable fishery,” said Sam Rauch, acting assistant NOAA administrator for NOAA Fisheries. “We will continue to work with Congress, the state and oyster fishermen through this challenging time.”

TALLAHASSEE – Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has approved the Governor’s September 2012 request for a commercial fisheries failure declaration for the ongoing fisheries disaster in Apalachicola Bay.

Governor Scott said, “The federal government did the right thing in approving this commercial fisheries failure declaration. Now we need the support of Congress to provide the dollars necessary to support this region’s recovery. Franklin County, FL- Around coastal communities near the Apalachicola Bay, oyster shells are sprinkled along the shore.

Oystermen rely on the catch of the day to feed their families. They have been doing it for generations.

"Not much out here right now, I don’t know what needs to be done, but something needs to be done," said an oystermen, while out in the bay. " The marine patrol is around us, hard timing us, it’s just a hard time right now."

"If we are here we are harassing them, If we are not here we are not doing enough about enforcement, so it puts law enforcement, the FWC, in a lose, lose situation," said Captain Rob Beaton from The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission.

FWC set out for a two-day patrol to make sure harvesters are following regulations.

"Some harvesters are facing some tough economic times and they are saying they are being forced because of the financial situation," said Beaton.

Captain Beaton says some harvesters are not shading the oysters, which causes them to grow bacteria. He has seen many cases where the oysters were too small to be snatched from the waters. The requirement is three inches minimum.

Captain Beaton says his team is trying to preserve the waters for the future

"We want to ensure that there is consumer confidence on oysters coming from this bay and that people look at this area as a top place to get oysters," said Beaton.

CBS News has learned more than two million Americans have been told they cannot renew their current insurance policies — more than triple the number of people said to be buying insurance under the new Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare.

There have been estimates about hundreds of thousands of people losing coverage, CBS News’ Jan Crawford reported on "CBS This Morning." CBS News has reached out to insurance companies across the country to determine some of the real numbers — and this is just the tip of the iceberg, Crawford said. The people who are opening the letters are shocked to learn they can’t keep their insurance policies despite President Obama’s assurances to the contrary.

The White House is on the defensive trying to explain it, after Mr. Obama repeatedly said, "If you like your doctor or health care plan, you can keep it."

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, "What the president said and what everybody said all along is that there are going to be changes brought about by the Affordable Care Act to create minimum standards of coverage."

It’s an unexpected reality of Obamacare being told through anecdotes in local papers and on social media. But the hard numbers reveal the evidence is far more than anecdotal. CBS News has confirmed with insurance companies across the country that more than two million people are getting notices they no longer can keep their existing plans. In California, there are 279,000; in Michigan, 140,000; Florida, 300,000; and in New Jersey, 800,000. And those numbers are certain to go even higher. Some companies who tell CBS News they’ve sent letters won’t say how many.

Industry experts like Larry Levitt, of the Kaiser Family Foundation, say the insurance companies have no choice. "What we’re seeing now is reality coming into play," he said.

Obamacare forces them to drop many of their plans that don’t meet the law’s 10 minimum standards, including maternity care, emergency visits, mental health treatment and even pediatric dental care.

That means consumers have to sign on to new plans even if they don’t want or need the more generous coverage. Industry experts say about half the people getting the letters will pay more — and half will pay less, thanks to taxpayer subsidies. Levitt said, "The winners outnumber the losers here, but because of all the website problems, it’s hard to find out who the winners are because they don’t even know it themselves."

And for the people who’ve gotten the letters, the broken website is a real problem, Crawford added on "CTM." They don’t know what to do. They don’t know if they get subsidies. And then there are others getting the letters who have very good insurance but are being told they can’t keep it. Industry experts CBS News talked to say for everyone, the best bet is to just call their insurance companies to get the information.

My main issue with A.C.A is the fact that people are going to be fined if they do not carry minimum health insurance. Those that can’t afford the health insurance will be allowed to ride on the tax payers to cover their costs i.e. Medicaid. So this tells me that all people on Welfare will now get a free ride on Medicaid costing the tax payers even more. Like a freaking vacuum just sucking the low income people into the system.

"Starting January 1, 2014, if someone doesn’t have a health plan that qualifies as minimum essential coverage, he or she may have to pay a fee that increases every year: from 1% of income (or per adult, whichever is higher) in 2014 to 2.5% of income (or 5 per adult) in 2016. The fee for children is half the adult amount. The fee is paid on the 2014 federal income tax form, which is completed in 2015. People with very low incomes and others may be eligible for waivers. Obama will sign an Executive Order in Feb 2014 (after the companies establish their new rates on 1Jan2014); his order will declare that the greedy company’s exorbitant rates now require Washington to save Americans by nationalizing ACA and making it single payer like SS and Medicare; the Treasury will deduct premiums from everyone’s pay. This will work so well that in Mar2014, Washington will nationalize all remaining private enterprise and begin deducting student loans, credit cards, mortgages, car payments, utilities and child support (unions, politicians, banksters and welfare recipients will be exempted). He will rename the Statue of Liberty as the Statue of Equality and after having solved all of liberal America’s problems, Obama will take a much needed 6 month vacation at his "official" birthplace while the low IQ voters prepare his coronation ceremony.

President Obama repeatedly assured Americans that after the Affordable Care Act became law, people who liked their health insurance would be able to keep it. But millions of Americans are getting or are about to get cancellation letters for their health insurance under Obamacare, say experts, and the Obama administration has known that for at least three years.

Four sources deeply involved in the Affordable Care Act tell NBC News that 50 to 75 percent of the 14 million consumers who buy their insurance individually can expect to receive a “cancellation” letter or the equivalent over the next year because their existing policies don’t meet the standards mandated by the new health care law. One expert predicts that number could reach as high as 80 percent. And all say that many of those forced to buy pricier new policies will experience “sticker shock.”

It’s no secret that the field of computer science is booming. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that 70 percent of all new jobs across STEM fields during this decade – which includes everything from engineering to the social sciences – will be in computer science. That means if your company isn’t pulling in an influx of young computer science interns, you may be in jeopardy.

You may be wondering what interns have to do with tomorrow’s hiring prospects. It’s important to know that nearly 60 percent of all interns receive full-time job offers upon internship completion. Today’s interns are tomorrow’s full-time professionals.

The National Association of College and Employers Job Outlook 2013 survey found that computer and information science degrees are among the most in-demand as of late, meaning it’s in your company’s best interest to nab talented computer science students before your competitors.

Drawing in the best computer science students to your internship program isn’t always an easy task. Here are a few ways give your employment brand a makeover and ensure you stand out as the demand for computer science talent increases:

1. Do more with your campus recruiting efforts

With better recruiting efforts comes better intern candidates. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to recruiting awesome computer science interns, but it often comes down to making the right connections.

Create strong, lasting connections with top computer science programs in colleges across the nation. Begin reaching out to professors, graduate assistants and career centers at these colleges and universities, and attend their career fairs.

You may even consider asking for referrals from current and previous employees and interns. They will be able to vouch for and put you in direct contact with great computer science students who fit your company’s culture, skill requirements and overall goals.

2. Lend a hand

Instead of actively selling your employer brand to potential computer science interns, offer to help out first. Reach out to on-campus connections and offer to speak directly to computer science classes about industry happenings or career advice, like how to land a great computer science-relatedinternship and what to expect when taking one.

Make a point to actually visit campuses to speak directly to students about your industry. Consider hosting a “tech talk” for computer science students.

If you can’t make it to the classroom, consider hosting a Q&A session via Skype or hosting an informative Google Hangout. You may even want to create a mentorship program between some of your current employees and computer science students at a local university.

3. Up the ante

Creating contests or competitions is a great way to drum up interest and add a new level of energy to your intern recruiting and hiring process. Consider hosting an online contest that allows candidates to showcase their skills. If set up properly, you will be able to both attract and assess a number of potential candidates vying for your attention and internship opportunities.

You may also want to consider holding a technical contest like a hackathon. Most large organizations are currently offering these competitions, partnering, or sponsoring them to ensure they are first in line for top contenders.

4. Competitive compensation rates

Pay’s a hot topic in the internship community in light of the recent lawsuits springing up across a variety of industries. Computer science is one area where you have to be willing to offer a competitive salary to ensure you’ll pull in top students. The current salary average for computer science and ITinterns comes in at just under $ 19 an hour, but can run as high as $ 30 an hour.

5. Top-notch experience

It takes a lot more than a fair salary to draw in and retain great computer science interns. According to a recent InternMatch survey, only 8.8 percent of students said pay was the most important part of their internship experience.

Ensure your internship program offers an incredibly immersive, hands-on environment that includes valuable projects, training and mentorship. If your interns aren’t walking away with a bursting portfolio, they probably won’t even consider returning. 

6. Cater to diversity

Nabbing the best computer science interns also means playing to the needs of diverse candidates. Whether this means offering more flexibility, higher pay or an unmatched diversity mentorship program, it’s your chance to make a difference in your field. You may even consider offering needs-based scholarships like Etsy did to support women in technology and narrow the gender gap.

Drawing in the best computer science interns for your internship program is essential to the future of your company. Going above and beyond to improve your internship program and recruiting process is certain to gain the attention of a number of worthy students.
