Report: Xiaomi overtook Samsung to become top smartphone vendor in China in Q2 2014

Popular Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is hogging the limelight after several analyst reports have pointed to its rapid growth — among them Kantar and Strategy Analytics. Now another research firm, Canalys, has offered up even more evidence of Xiaomi’s popularity — in the second quarter of 2014, it found that Xiaomi recorded a 14 percent market share in China on the back of 240 percent year-on-year growth, overtaking Samsung in terms of volume of smartphones. Samsung confirms plans for Tizen-based smart TVs, will release SDK to developers in July

Samsung is ramping up its preparations to release products based on the new Tizen operating system after it announced plans to introduce an SDK (software development kit) for smart TV products from next month. Alongside its Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch, Samsung has announced the Gear Fit, a fitness band that will take on the likes of Nike, Fitbit and Jawbone. The device includes a heart rate monitor, pedometer, sleep tracker and a 1.84-inch Super AMOLED curved display for displaying notifications.

Samsung expects the Gear Fit’s battery life to last about 3-4 days on typical usage, though minimal usage could stretch up to 5 days. As far as sensors go, the band includes an accelerometer, gyro and heart rate monitor. It uses Bluetooth 4.0 LE to connect to your phone.

The Gear Fit’s changeable straps come in black, orange and “mocha grey.”
