A.M. Links: House Suing Obama, Ebola Epidemic Out of Control, Israel to Investigate Gaza School Shelling

Source: reason.com – Thursday, July 31, 2014
Before the House voted, largely along party lines, to authorize a lawsuit against President Obama, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) suggested on the House floor yesterday that the lawsuit against the president was a "veiled attempt" at impeachment and claimed Democrats never tried to impeach President Bush even though he "pushed" America into the Iraq War. In fact, Rep. Lee co-sponsored a bill to impeach Bush in 2008. Democrats continue to use the threat of impeachment, suggested by Democrats, to raise money and political support. In a town hall meeting yesterday, Governor Chris Christie (R-N.J.) warned that the state government won't be able to meet all of its pensions obligations. The Peace Corps is evacuating from Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone over concerns about the ongoing Ebola outbreak while Doctors Without Borders warns the epidemic is out of control. Israel says it will investigate the shelling of a U.N. school in Gaza . A government spokesperson said he was sure Israel would apologize if it finds it was responsible for the attack. Prosecutors in China have formally charged with "separatism" a Beijing-based Uighur professor who disappeared with seven students seven months ago, although there was no mention of the students. George Bush will be writing a book about his father, George Bush . Follow Reason and Reason 24/7 on Twitter, and like us on Facebook. You can also get the top stories mailed to you— sign up here .

JOE GANDELMAN: Conservatives target free school lunches

The Conservatives

A parody of… a parody. To call this undemocratic and elitist mob a government is probably an abuse of the term. Comparing the Tories with Imperial Rome (amongst ‘other’ questionable regimes) is more justified with every passing week. In some aspects at least, it is becoming a case of no bread but many a media circus. Arrogance, elitism, sadism and cruelty, ignorance and a contempt for democracy and the actual business of government – such labels and more can be easily applied.

The poster is inspired by those for the infamous 1979 film; ‘Caligula’. Cameron is shown as Caesar and tyrant, a "weak tea Caligula" as was recently observed. Nick Clegg appears as a Vice-Caesar, and ‘Gemellus’, the cousin whom Caligula at first adopted as his son and heir but whom he later had murdered. ‘Claudius’ Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, and Cameron’s bumbling rival and likely successor, as was Claudius after the assassination of Caligula.

In the ‘cast and credits list’ below, there is George Osborne as ‘Incitatus’, Caligula’s horse that he doted on and even threatened to have made a senator in order to humiliate that institution. Cameron has gone one further and actually made the ‘horse’ (or should it be an ass) Chancellor of the Exchequer, embarrassing the government, the parliament and the country as a whole, who clearly after two and half years of his incompetence, want rid of him. Yet he remains. Thatcher is ‘Tiberius’, Caligula’s vile predecessor. She is the true idealogical predecessor of Cameron. Lastly, Iain Duncan Smith as the ‘slave trader’, nothing directly to do with the film itself or the specific history associated with it, but of course a role chosen to commemorate his role as punisher of the disabled and the unemployed; only too willing to abuse and exploit the vulnerable as cheap or free labour through various so-called workfare schemes.

And lastly Ayn Rand, the author whose rancid prose is much praised amongst Tories and the US Republicans; who put forth selfishness as a virtue and whose works are virtually scriptures for those who mindlessly pursue limitless power and wealth at any cost. The destruction of the National Health Service, the welfare state, and the threatened demise of such as Medicare and the so-called ‘Obamacare’ in the US; would have been praised by Ayn Rand. However, the fact remains – however much her supporters choose to ignore it – that Rand both sought and received both welfare and public healthcare towards the end of her life.

JOE GANDELMAN: Conservatives target free school lunches
The real baloney is actually in conservatives' “No free school lunches!” battle cry, and in what turned out to be a bogus example Rep. Paul Ryan used in his speech before the Conservative Political Action Conference to take the argument to a new (low …

Thomas: Conservatives have opportunity for new stance on crime, schools
OXON HILL, Md. — The first “people” I recognized on arriving at last week's Conservative Political Action Committee gathering just outside Washington were two stormtroopers and a Wookiee from the 1977 film “Star Wars.” Some of the speeches also …
